I remember being a little girl and heading down to Nevada street with my mom, where Ashland Greenhouses used to be. The domed greenhouses had sliding doors that were kept closed to keep it warm inside. The smell of dirt and flowers always filled the air. And the warmth; oh how I loved running in from the rain and cold to the heat that greeted you inside. But even with all of those great memories, my favorite part was seeing all of the flowers and plants — there were so many that I could get lost in the rows of colors.
Today, it doesn’t feel all that different to me. Sure, Ashland Greenhouses has moved out on Buttler Creek Road across the freeway, and the building is very different than it was on Nevada Street. But, the feeling is still the same. Rows and rows of plants span the entire space. Up above hanging plants are started and soon will be flourishing with greenery and flowers. And any plant that is hearty enough to withstand the cool spring temperatures can be found on tables outdoors.
Plants to pay special attention to when visiting Ashland Greenhouses include their vegetable garden starts and the fuchsias. First, the answer is yes, you can find plenty of vegetable starts around the valley at other nurseries, but I never have an issue with any of my garden plants from Ashland Greenhouses while plants from other locations are hit and miss on how well they do. I am not sure what magic they pour into them other than love and knowledge of when and how to grow, but whatever it is, it works.
When I talk about fuchsias, the first thing that comes to mind is Ashland Greenhouses. Why? Well, they grow the most amazing fuchsias and have hundreds of starts to choose from or gorgeous pre-planted baskets. My grandma always had fuchsias hanging from baskets in the summer, and that is probably a lot of where my love comes for them, and I am sure she bought them at Ashland Greenhouses. Today, I pick up my starts early in the season and keep them in my garden window until it is safe for them to go outdoors. I then put them in my hanging baskets, and within weeks, I have the most beautiful hanging baskets. Seriously if you are looking for something to grow this summer in a shady spot, get yourself some fuchsias.
Long story short, if you are looking for great garden plants or flowers for your yard, make a trip to Ashland Greenhouses – you won’t be disappointed!
